Loss to Alta Loma

MONTCLAIR, CA; (09/19/2013): To say that Thursday nights' game was bad, would be kind. The Ontario Jaguars (0-4), who were coming off a narrow one-point loss to the Nogales Nobles were looking for their first win of the season. Head Coach Ron Stocking (5-19) knew it would be difficult as the Jaguars were facing even more injuries than in previous weeks. In fact, fifteen players were on the sidelines at the start of the game, most in casts or slings. Unfortunately, the Jaguars' Defense was the most affected by injuries... and it showed. On the Jaguars very first possession, Ontario QB Edgar Murillo put up a pass that deflected off the receiver's hands and right into the waiting arms of Alta Loma DB Kendall Greer. A couple of plays later and Alta Loma was on the board taking a 7-point lead 25 seconds into the game.

From there, it got even uglier. The Jaguars struggled to move the ball on offense while the Braves moved the ball at will putting 28 points on the board in the first quarter. Alta Loma would score touchdowns on each of their first five possessions. At halftime, Alta Loma was up 41-0.

After the break, Alta Loma didn't score again and Alta Loma Head Coach Joe Szczepanski (9-15) told the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin why, "We got some of our backups in there in the second quarter and they played the whole second half so that was good.” The only bright spot for Ontario came from sophomore QB Cameron Poe, who came in to relieve Murillo in the 2nd quarter. Poe carried the ball well and connected with WR Christian Beltran in the corner of the end zone for the Jaguars only score. Beltran's fingertip catch made it seem that all was well with him after his four week absence with a broken foot. But once again, the injury gremlins were on the move as Beltran spent the rest of the game with his foot iced up. Alta Loma won the game 41-6.

LB Adrian Bueno left the game early with a high ankle sprain, DL Gerardo Semerdjian broke his wrist and QB Edgar Murillo was sidelined with a knee sprain early in the 3rd quarter. Jaguars LB Jason Lara, who has nursed a shoulder injury all season, left the field in an ambulance after dislocating his shoulder. He is likely gone for the season. Jerry Cavender, Athletic Trainer for Ontario High School told, "I've never seen a season like this. I can't believe how many injuries there have been. It's amazing." On Friday, in the JV contest at Alta Loma, DB Adrien Timmons had to leave the field on a stretcher after breaking his leg. If my math is correct, that's three broken legs, four high ankle sprains, three wrist/hand injuries, two shoulder injuries and so on, and so on.

This Friday, the Varsity Jaguars will host the Garey Vikings (0-4) in the first of six league contests. With the number of starters who will be watching from the sidelines, Ontario will have to fight their way through their Homecoming Game. Kick-off is set for 7:00pm at Montclair High School.
